Rangers 18U college prep team downs Ontario in extras to capture gold
It doesn’t get any sweeter than this: the Cloverdale Rangers are national champions.
The college prep 18U Cloverdale Rangers baseball squad won provincials in Trail two weekends ago and capped off an amazing season by winning the national championship Aug. 17 in Fort MacMurray, Alberta.
“We won the whole thing!” exclaimed Brien Gemmell, a team parent and athletic director at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School in Cloverdale.
The Cloverdale kids defeated Team Ontario 2-1 in extra innings to capture the banner.
The team had an amazing year going 30-6 in the regular season and losing only one game at provincials—a round-robin match to Trail—and finishing out what will likely be (at least up until now) one of their highest sporting achievements.
The Cloverdale Rangers elite baseball program—the brainchild of Bob Foerster, GM of the Cloverdale Rangers high performance program—is only in its third year.
Mike Gray, 2nd VP for the Cloverdale Minor Baseball Association, told the Cloverdale Reporter a few weeks ago the Rangers elite program has exceeded expectations in its first three years and the 18U College Prep team was just one example of the success they’ve enjoyed.
“It’s been a really great expansion to what Cloverdale Minor Baseball has been able to offer,” Gray said. “It’s given us a really good high performance program to keep kids in community baseball—B.C. Minor Baseball.”
